Domestic & Foreign Portfolio Participation in Equity Trading:

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) released and analyzed trading figures from major custodians and market operators on their Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) flows. The period analyzed ended 31 January 2018. By January 2018 Total Portfolio Investment was N394.44 billion; N166.39 billion was foreign inflow, accounting for 42.18% while N228.05 billion was domestic inflow, accounting for 57.82%. In January 2017 Total Portfolio Investment was N95.32 billion; N44.01 billion (46.17%) was foreign while N51.31 billion (53.83%) was domestic inflow. Overall Total transactions in the Nigerian bourse decreased by 17.96% from N480.80 billion (Dec. 2017) to N394.44 billion (Jan. 2018). However, comparing year-to-year change total transaction increased by 313.81% from N95.32 billion recorded in Jan. 2017 to N394.44 billion in Jan. 2018.
Trends presented by NSE show that proportions of Foreign and Domestic investments have been competitive since 2007. Over the eleven years NSE reports” domestic transactions have decreased by 62.46% from N3.556 trillion in 2007 to N1.33 trillion in 2017. However, there was a significant increase in 2017 by 111% from N634 billion recorded in 2016”.
